Description
The first time I came into contact with strawberries was the sticky sickly sweetness of strawberry jam in Malaysia. It was in the late 1970’s and jams were more sugar than fruit especially for fruits that were not local to Malaysia. My little imagination associated this taste with the strawberries described in my beloved Enid Blyton books. When I was about 12, I tried my first strawberries straight from a plant in Tasmania. I couldn’t believe my luck when I found a random plant in the back garden of the house we moved into. It was a disappointing experience as the fruit was tasteless! Fast forward to 2013 and I tried Scottish strawberries straight from the berry belt of Scotland. It was truly a magical moment. They tasted exactly as I imagined and still think it is crazy to smother their delicate flavour in cream and sugar!
It’s all in the details
In this watercolour painting, that simple, summer moment is captured in a way that feels both real and whimsical. The piece brings together the vibrant red of the strawberry and the warm. Glowing amber of the honey in a striking, mouth-watering scene that invites you to pause and appreciate the beauty of nature’s sweetest offerings. As you gaze at the painting, you might find yourself caught up in the way the honey glistens, creating soft reflections of light, while the strawberry’s seeds catch tiny sparkles of gold.
The texture of the honey is smooth and glossy, contrasting with the bumpy surface of the berry. It almost making you feel as if you could reach out and touch it. There’s a tangible sense of realism in the details of the strawberry—the small imperfections of its skin, the curve of its calyx —and yet, there’s something a bit magical about the way the honey seems to flow, as if time has slowed down to allow us to savor this sweet moment.
The painting doesn’t shout for attention but rather invites you in with its subtle beauty. It would make a wonderful addition to a kitchen, dining room, or any space where the joys of food and nature are celebrated. And because the artwork is original and one-of-a-kind, it adds a unique touch to any collection. It’s not just a painting of a strawberry and honey—it’s a reminder of the little moments of sweetness that life has to offer.
